Are you a oatmeal fanatic like me? Like you look forward to waking up in the morning just so you can eat a bowl of oatmeal? But looking for a quicker and healthier alternative than those flavored oatmeal packets? Then these On-the-Go Oatmeal Packets are for you!
If you asked me what I ate for breakfast this morning it was probably oatmeal. If you take a quick look on my blog you will also see there are a lot of oatmeal recipes. Slow cooker oats, overnight oats, breakfast oatmeal cookies you name it!
When I was traveling and looking for a healthy way to enjoy my morning oatmeal I thought why don’t I make my own oatmeal packets?! Original or plain oatmeal packets by themselves are great but by themselves don’t have a ton of flavor and the flavored instant oatmeal packets are loaded with processed sugar and really don’t taste all that great (in my opinion). So instead I decided to make my own oatmeal packets using instant oats then adding in my own flavorings, dried fruit and nuts, then portioned them into mason jars. You could also store them in another microwave safe container or a Ziploc bag. Whatever works! Then when ready to eat add in the liquid ingredients and heat on the stove or in the microwave. Don’t have a microwave or stove? No problem! You can also just add in boiling water and stir.
These oatmeal packets are perfect for just about any situation. For me they are great for a quick breakfast when I am getting the little guys breakfast ready. I don’t need to pull out a million different ingredients, I just throw the contents of the Mason jar into a sauce pan with some milk, heat and stir a couple times. I also used them on a recent trip to Arizona I packed them in a Ziploc bag then just added them to a cup with hot water on the plane. You could also keep a stash in your desk drawer for an easy breakfast when you get to work. The options are endless.
I added in raisins, walnuts, chia seeds and cinnamon. You could easily switch up the dried fruit, nut and spices based on your preference or what you have in the pantry!
- ½ cup original instant or old fashioned oats
- 2 tablespoons dried fruit ( I used raisins)
- 2 tablespoons nuts (I used walnuts)
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- Add all ingredients to a 12-16 ounce Mason Jar or container or a sandwich size ziplock bag. Store in the pantry until ready to eat. When ready to eat see instructions below.
Add 1 cup water, low fat milk or milk alternative to container. Microwave on 100 percent power (high) for 1-1/2 to 2 minutes. Stir before serving.
To a medium sauce pan on medium heat add contents of container plus 1 cup water, low fat milk or milk alternative. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until liquid absorbed.
If desired, top with additional fresh fruit, nut butter, or yogurt.
*Note: You can also add about 1 cup hot water and stir to combine. But for best results I recommend using the microwave or stove top cooking method.
